This week, I wanted to start looking more into how I can apply sign language to science classes. Science is a tough subject as it requires a lot of words that are not typically familiar to students, which can be made even more difficult when the student can't hear the explanation that is being given.
I used a Youtube Channel called "Atomic Hands" to start looking into different scientific words that would be used in the classroom.
The video that I originally found describes mitosis and meiosis in sign language.
I liked this video because she describes what each of these words mean, but also the signs themselves can give information about what is happening in each word. Like for example, cell division is the splitting of one cell into 2 identical cells which is shown by the way the hands together make a circle at the beginning and split into 2 identical hand shapes.
I think this type of sign language could be useful even in a classroom where all students are hearing. As we know, it is important for students to feel seen in the classroom. Showing these types of videos would be beneficial in classrooms where the teacher may not know ASL, because it allows those students who may use ASL to feel seen, but also have a way to discuss what they are learning in their own language.
Here's a video of what I learned this week!
